Post-natal massage in Bristol

healing and restorative post-natal massage therapy

After giving birth, the effects of such an powerful physical and emotional experience are often held in the body as muscular tension. Post-natal massage can help relax the mother and release some of the strain accumulated during the later stages of pregnancy and birth. Adapting to motherhood with little sleep, at a time when hormones are fluctuating, can be hugely challenging. Relaxing holistic massage helps mothers to rest, take time out to reconnect with their body and maintain a sense of wellbeing after childbirth.

Because each birth and pregnancy is unique, a therapist who can understand and accommodate these differences is essential. Before giving a massage we spend time taking a detailed consultation and listening to each woman’s experience. Sessions then incorporate a variety of techniques and are tailor-made to suit the mother and, if needs be, baby too.*
If lying face down is uncomfortable or inappropriate, especially following a c-section or if the breasts are swollen from breast-feeding, we can work flexibly in the side-lying position on either the massage table or on a floor futon. The futon is great if mum wants to bring the newborn along as baby can be close to mum and even feed during the massage without too much disruption.
We encourage women to come as soon as possible after birth, but advise that you call in advance to discuss your particular situation to make sure there are no contraindications for massage. If you’re thinking of getting a massage voucher as a gift for a new mum then please note, these are valid for one year so there’s plenty of time for women to get to the session, regardless of their birth experience.
We also offer home visits for women we’ve already seen regularly for pregnancy massage and this service can often be extended to new clients in some situations. There’s a small additional cost to cover our time/costs. Please call to discuss.
Sam and Sharmila both offer post-natal massage in Bristol. Sam works from home in Southville and Sharmila is also available from her home and in the near future a clinic space in Westbury-on-Trym. For more information see Prices & Bookings.
*please note we only massage mum not baby.

My post-natal massage was wonderful. I had extremely bad neck pain after labour and Sam managed to alleviate the discomfort greatly. My partner also took the opportunity to have a much needed full body massage. We both felt revived, relaxed and ready to enjoy the first precious weeks with our baby. Fantastic.
